Julie Brook ‘Made, Unmade’
Gallery Projection
We have been working with Artist Julie Brook since 2013 on her multi screen work “Made, Unmade”. This is a multi screen work based on film of the Artists sculptural works shot in Libya and Namibia, that has been presented in a variety of galleries across the UK.
About the project
Dependent on the architecture of the galleries, up to ten full HD images approximately 5m across were arrayed around the exhibition space. Each screen had accompanying audio playback, plus there was an additional overall immersive audio track.
The playback was via a system of a dozen syncronised Brightsign players feeding Optoma HD projectors and Apart speakers. One challenge was to install a significant quantity of hardware into galleries without it imposing itself on the work and there was the simple problem of projecting onto the perimeter of a room without any of the projectors themselves getting in the way.
Due to the accuracy required, artificial keystoning or geometry correction could not be used and everything was done optically by simply if rather laboriously putting the projectors in exactly the right place.
The final edit and sequencing of the video is done in the gallery by Julie, so it was important that we installed a system that would allow for quick updates of individual files on a single player in a cycle of up to 20 different chapters, and that it also allowed for random access to particular parts of the cycle as it was developed and this was achieved with custom scripts and a four button control box.

Illustrating Landscape architecture within the RSA annual exhibition we installed a network synced brightsign system with 4 optoma EH415ST projectors plus 1 EH320UST unit.
The fact that a 20′ wide HD image was possible from 5′ in the first place was close to miraculous, and that the linearity, focus and brightness were as good as they were using unit obviously designed for more modest use a bonus.
